Mary Papanicolaou, wife to George Papanicolaou, actively contributed to the early development of the Pap smear by serving as her husband’s first and most consistent test subject. 

Over many years, she underwent hundreds to thousands of cervical sampling exams, helping George Papanicolaou refine his technique and better understand normal versus abnormal cells. 

Her willingness to repeatedly participate in these early, unproven procedures was instrumental in transforming the Pap smear into one of the most effective cancer screening tools in medicine.
