The Helen

The Helen

Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens was a groundbreaking OB/GYN who transformed women’s healthcare and medical education in the United States, rising from being the only Black woman in her medical school class at the University of Illinois College of Medicine to becoming the first Black woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons, and became the first black woman board certified in obstetrics & gynecology in Philadelphia.

Practicing in segregated, under-resourced hospitals, she dedicated her career to caring for low-income Black women, expanding access to cervical cancer screening through Pap smears, and in 1967 founded one of the nation’s first teen pregnancy clinics that treated young patients with dignity and comprehensive support.

We believe you shouldn’t have to choose between comfort and confidence.

Lilac Market Headbands were born from the frustration of headbands that slipped, squeezed, or just didn’t last. So we thoughtfully designed one that actually works — and feels as good as it looks.

Each piece is handcrafted in Springfield, Missouri using our signature buttery-soft, ultra-stretch fabric that gently hugs without pulling. The double-layer construction absorbs sweat and stays in place, while the 3-in-1 twist design lets you switch up your look effortlessly. Wear it to your toughest workout, your longest shift, or your everyday moments — because real life deserves accessories that keep up.
